"My father Demetrious (Dave) Sophios died in 1953.

He was survived by my mother, Sarah Isobel (Ella) by 40 years, but I know he was in her heart in all that time."

Peter Sophios, Mittagong, NSW, Australia

Recent photograph Peter Sophios who lives with his partner Fran Collyer in Mittagong, in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia.

"Some years ago now we moved here from Canberra for a better lifestyle. The Highlands is a beautiful area, close to city of Sydney and the beaches in Wollongong.

My interests are painting and drawing, writing, local history, the internet and the geneology of my family. Together we enjoy visiting our wonderful beaches, the local vineyards, our national parks and magnificent rain forests. All are close nearby and add to the natural beauty of the area.

We have been in our new home in Mittagong since 2001 and we are now working hard developing the gardens, which we are planting to attract the wonderful birds and little animals that abound in the peace and quiet of this beautiful area."

Panagiotis Sophios, grandfather to, Peter Sophios, Mittagong.

"Panagiotis Sophios, my Dad's father (right) was born on the island of Kythera, where he owned rural properties.

Sadly, I don't have photos of my paternal grandmother.

As was the custom, I was given the first names of both grandfathers, Peter and Thomas".

Peter and Deanna Makarthis - top of the (Sydney Harbour) Bridge Climb

Peter and Deanna Makarthis - top of the (Sydney Harbour) Bridge Climb.

Peter is an Irish-Australian - who is "obsessed" with Kythera, Kytherians, Greeks, and Greece - to a point where he is "more Greek than the Greeks."

Deanna's Mothers Maiden name was Phacheas (Fatseas).
Deanna's mother was Calliope Phacheas, born 1908, at Kurri Kurri NSW - her father was George Phacheas, and mother Sophia (nee) Defteron.

George arrived in Australia in 1901, and with brother Peter Phacheas, and a nephew Alexander, settled in West Maitland.

George returned to Smyrna 1904, and married Sophia Defteron, returning the same year.

They established an oyster saloon in the newly ermerging town of Kurri Kurri, remaining there until c 1920, when they moved to 23 Renwick St, Redfern - only about 100 metres from the Cathederal in Cleveland Street.

Only a small number of Fatseas used the Phacheas translation, and all are closely related.

This name has been lost in Eastern Australia due to a lineage of daughters, and only a small group remain in Western Australia, which have evolved to Phaceas.

To all Kytherians, Australians, and overseas visitors to Sydney, be advised that the Bridge Climb is a great experience, which shouldn't be missed.

My family's present to me on my fiftieth birthday was a "climb", and it was the best Birthday present I have received in my life.
