"Haji" - a generic parachoukli

Persons who travelled to the Middle East from Kythera were almost invariably given the generic parachoukli "Haji" - referred to as "Hajithes".

This relates to the Muslim "haj" - or pilgrimage, to holy places.

A number of Kytherians, including the parents of Arthur Gerakiteys, were given this "additional" parachoukli for this reason.

This convention was followed by persons from neighbouring "eftanissia" - such as Zakynthos.

The family of Theothoros Plessas, (aged 75, now living in Regents Park), also carries the same parachoukli - "Haji" - for the same reasons.
