A posed picture of my Uncle Andonis, in the Greek Army in 1921
My uncle, Andonis D.Gavrilis, seated, my father's brother with a fellow soldier in the Greek Army Oct. 6, 1921. Died fighting the Turks in the 1922-23 conflict in Asia Minor.
This picture is from Kythera soon after the exchange of Greeks for Turks in Smyrna, 1923. These are refugees that have just come back from Smyrna to Kythera. My grandfather Theodore is seated in amongst the younger people. My gother, Helen, is seated to his left and my aunt Mary is seated to his right. This may be some kind of a schooling or a teaching lesson, as the man all dressed up in a suit looks to be a teacher(?). Also the man laying across the front looks relaxed and resting. Maybe some relative of one of the people looking at the web site?

This is a fragment of a portrait of our Papou and Yaya, George and Maria Tzannes. Papou’s nickname was Pasha Ali, because he was such a big landowner in Fratsia, with beautiful orchards, vineyards and gardens. His house, perfectly situated in a quiet spot just behind the Platia, commanded a magnificent view of the valley towards Leondarikianika. Maria was originally a Kallinikos from Viradika, the daughter of a priest nicknamed Karaghiozis. (An amusing coincidence, as Ali Pasas and Karaghiozis are both popular characters in the Greek shadow puppet theater.) Together Papou and Yaya had 11 children and 23 grandchildren. Of the 11 children, nine survived into adulthood. Stavros, Ioannis, Constantinos and Fortini emigrated to America; Cosmas and Stamatoula to Australia; Eleni to Athens. Only two daughters, Kalliope Masselos and Pothiti Kypriotis, remained on Kythera. Photograph by Panayotis Fatseas.

My grandfather, Demetrios Gavriles, at his 100th birthday at my uncle's house in Athens 1949.
Unknown relative? From Kythera as it is marked on back, but no name or date. Possibly a relative: either Sophios or Christianos. Maybe someone recognizes the man. Looks fairly tall.

A wedding attended by my uncle Theodore Gavrilys in the 1950's. It might be some nephew or he was the best man? It is in Logothetianica. Looks like it could be on the steps of my Grandfather's house.

The young girl with the striped dress is my Mother's sisiter Mary Panaretos when she was very young. Maybe someone recognises this landmark? From Steve Tryphillis: in the village of Trifyllanika near Potamo. The place is called "vrisi" the local spring where in old times people would wash clothes collect water etc. also the locals would hold picnic partys there. At the back of the vrisi the locals would have their small properties and the vrisi would water their gardens. The water is natural spring water. The water is still running slowly. For some years no water was running then some locals cleared the pipe of vines to allow water flow. To find the vrisi you go to the end of Trifyllanika concrete road and wind down a small track about 5 min. There you find the the vrisi in a beautiful & peaceful garden area and you can enjoy a lovely cold drink of water.
