There is a story to this pic, but first let's see if anyone can identify this man.

Anitsa lived across the road from us when I stayed at our family home in Mitata, and was invariably watering her wonderful garden when I passed. Generous to a fault, her smiling face made every cloud disappear.

Ioannis Prineas (Rivithi). A picture of a lovely man, who left behind a wonderful family which do him credit.
Ireni (pictured here) and her sister Maria were wonderful women. They were tender with their animals, who loved them back; they could cook an artichoke stew over a wood fire which would have put the best chefs in Europe to shame; they were so generous despite having so little themselves; and they were ever joyful, despite living quite tragic lives. Here she is, walking majestically back along the cemetry road towards Mitata.

Panayoti Maneas is not only one of the nicest and friendliest shop-keepers on the island, his general store is also one of the most facinating shops to be found. Pins, towels, lamps, buckets, rope, pots, cheese drains etc, all placed strategically in shelves, glass cabinets, packing the window and covering the floor. He is much too nice to be a really good business man - he does the bargaining for your by slashing a few hundred drachmas (at the time...) from most bills over 15,000.

World-famous herbalist Juliette de Bairacli Levy lived for many years on Kythera at Paliopoli - here she is walking down to her favourite beach for a morning swim. One of her remedies is featured in the "Home Remedies" section of this website.

Panayiotis in front of his shop in Potamos - an old smile regular visitors to Kythera now miss.

Back in the 1980s, George Kastrisios - better known as Tarzan - was perhaps the most charasmatic taxi driver the island had and will perhaps ever have. There is a story about him in the "stories" section of this website.

Who cannot think of Potamos without thinking of Strati's store?

Georgos was one of the most lovable people in Mitata. When I arrived on Kythera in 1985 he was still driving a taxi - an old Bulgarian car I think - and could be quite sly with his tarifs if one wasn't careful. We had a lot of fun together, and he always looked after my friends and I very well. He was definitely one of the "stars" of the island. Unfortunately he died a couple of years ago (in 2000 I think) leaving a wonderful wife and two hardworking sons.
