just past the village of mylopotamos and down to the village of kato chora, you will find one of the main past fortresses of kythera [ the others are the settlement of paliochora and at chora ],on the left of this photo is the castle of kato chora with the village next to the castle , some of the buildings like houising , churches are in good condition considering the age of the settlement , you can also witness the various additions from differant rulers of the island throughout the history of kythera ... you can also walk through some of the streets of the fortress and see how people lived in proctected walls of the castle, when the turkish pirate era ended a new village started next to the castle ... another feature is the wonderful summer sunset you get from the castle late in the afternoon .. go and have a look for yourself one summers evening its magnificent ..

north of karava is platia ammos , lovely quiet village with a new seafood restraurant , and a lovely spot to spend on the beach , when it was too windy for the small ferry to dock at a agia pelagia it would come to platia ammos for the passengers to disembark ..today its one of kytheras best kept secrets ,

the picturesque fishing village of limnionas , situated west of mylopotamos , down a winding spetacular road that goes down to the village, in past years limniona was a fishing base for the mylopotamo area, the village folk would stay in those little cabins and fish the waters at limniona for a week or so then return up the mountain with their catch of seafood for their families .. today its a lovely place for a swim and a nice cold drink at the koisk on the beach on a warm august day ..

one of the many fire fighting trucks and men that battled the 2017 fires on the island but the road to mylopotamo both sides was extensively burnt .. but it will grow back now lets hope for plenty of winter rain ...!
one of the villages that the fire approached the houses at Areoi near mylopotamos..
the view from the aroniathika fire look out [ that was also burnt in the recent fires] the villages of aroniathika , friligianika , and kastrianika that were in danger of fire, as you can see a large area of land that was destoyed by this summers fires . the fire started near the kythera hospital , but once again great work by firemen and locals that helped fight the fires ...
the once beautiful waterfall at mylopotamos is now reduced to what resembles a swamp , in all my years of going to kythera i have never seen the waterfall with no water at all , in other yrears it was a treat to jump in the cold water on a hot summers day swim over to the falling water and sit there and cool off , but now the water is polluted , filled with leaves , bits of wood and full of rubbish , the still water smells, its a crying shame it looks like this , all the natural springs of kythera should be maintained as they are a feature of the island in the summer months , even the spring on the way to agia pelagia [ gallani ] is almost dry with only a small trickel of water , there are two stories circulating the island as why the once lush abundant spring waters of kythera have come to a stand still, one is the lack of rain water the last few years [ not knowing of springs but i thought it was natural water from below ground water springs ] and two that the spring waters have been diverted to peoples proerety to water crops, water for animals . and general watering conditions in villages around where the springs are !!! if this is the case people that are doing this should be exposed and severly fined for destroying the natural beauty of the island . the water fall at mylopotamo has damaged part of the beauty of that village . lets hope when we all visit the island again the springs are running with water and hopefully the spring in trifyllianika runs with water again as it stopped many years ago , this is part of what the council of kythera should be protecting, but as usaual the new council that is governing the island is not any better to previous councils , common on mr. mayor do somthing about our once lovely springs and get them running again .....

sad scenes all over the island of the remains of the current fires that swept through the island in early august , thankfully no lives or houses were lost, a big thank you to all those firemen local and from mainland greece that fought the fires .. that with no boat from athens made it a tough time for our island but people still smiled through it ,
