This is a close-up of one of the Gothic style windows in the Lancastrian school built by the British at Milapidea near Fatsadika. A similar (but smaller) school stands in the main square of Mylopotamos. Both schools were completed in the 1820s and stand as testimony to Kythera's unique blend of Venetian, British and Aegean architecture.

The grey shutters present a striking contrast to the off white rendered walls of this recently renovated contemporary house in Aroniadika
One of the earliest English bridges is this single arch stone bridge built along the road to Myrtithia. The British were responsible for the construction of roads, bridges and schools on the island during their occupation from 1815 to 1864.
Vasilios Haros was one of Kythera's great artists. This is his house in Hora, just below Agia Anna.

Modern architecture comes face to face with an old windmill
A sad fact of life is that many houses and mansions on the island are crumbling as a result of the past exodus of Kytherians from the island. This scene from Karavas is repeated in most areas of the island with deserted houses nestled between occupied residences.
As you enter the Kastro in Hora you come across this old administrative building with its distinctive Venetian styling. Work is now underway to preserve the crumbling buildings and structures within the Kastro.
Set amongst the traditional houses of Aroniadika is the Averoff mansion which introduces almost a Cycladic style of architecture to an Ionian island!
This restored Venetian style entrance can be found in Katouni
This contemporary house is situated at Agia Pelagia and overlooks the sea.
This house is one of the most prominent in Hora and is situated at the base of the Kastro. It is a fine example of the archontika or mansions on the island which were the residences of nobles.
