Magnificent, large Photograph Print Exhibition of Lesvos and Kythera. Photographer and travel writer Tzeli Hadjidimitriou shares with us moments from Lesvos, the island where she was born and raised, and Kythera, the island she fell in love with many years ago. Evoking sensations and experiences that derive mostly from nature and less often from the daily human presence, while avoiding the superficial convenience of digital photography the photographs do not simply portray a beautiful landscape; they invite us to hear the sounds of its waters, calm and stormy, to feel the heat of its earth, burnt by the sun, to gaze at its moonlight, to feel the humidity of its forests.
This Exhibition features Kythera prominently, in a gallery administered by the University of NSW.
(4) Greek Orthodox Community event:
In search of Orpheus. Film showing, and Q&A with the director Tzeli Hadjidimitriou.
Wednesday 7 March. 6:30 pm.
Location: Greek Community Club, 206-210 Lakemba Street, Lakemba 2195.
Tel: 02 9740 6022
Language of event: Greek + English
In Search of Orpheus examines the mythical story of Orpheus and his connection with the island of Lesvos. It follows, in a poetic way, the traces of the mythical musician on this island, where, according to legend, his head and his lyre were washed up on the shore.
(5) Mytilenian Event: The Silent Path
Thursday 22 March. 6:00 pm.
Location: Mytilenian House, 225 Canterbury Road, Canterbury, 2193.
A series of three short documentaries shot in Lesvos by Tzeli Hadjidimitriou, during the financial and migrant crisis:
Salt and Bread introduces us to the people of a neighbourhood, an ouzo distillery and a boatbuilder. What they all have in common is their love for what they do.
Grannies presents four women of Lesvos, aging but strong in spirit, grounded in the soil and history of the island, recalling life with humour and wisdom.
Routvas is a remote shepherds’ family settlement in the mountains, next to a Christian chapel with ancient Greek columns, where they spend the summer with their flock of sheep.
The films provide a deep insight into Mytilenian culture and society.
