Grigorios D. Mihalopoulos

This biography is part of a collection from "Life in Australia" :

Mr. Grigorios D. Mihalopoulos, who comes from Areopolis in Laconia, is the first Greek to become involved in the real estate trade.

Mr. Michalopoulos came to Australia 10 years ago and during the intervening period has earned the respect and attention, not only of the Greeks, but of foreigners, too, for the daring enterprises on which has been engaged.

He is unresting, but affable, mild-mannered and possesses profound knowledge of commerce in Sydney. In 1912,Mr. Michalopoulos opened a real estate office, of the first order, at 37 Park St., through which he helps the interests of Greeks. He is a most successful buyer and seller and deals skilfully with legal matters, mortgages and so on.

An adorned straightforwardness, a sense of honour and speediness mark out Mr. Michalopoulos in every matter he undertakes. His commercial name is G.D. Mihal.

This biography is part of a collection from "Life in Australia" published in 1916 by John Comino. It is an important book as it was one of the first Greek books published in Australia for the Greeks back in the homeland. If they needed any more convincing of the golden opportunities awaiting them in Australia, it probably helped create interest amongst young Kytherians and other Greeks. Each of the men portrayed in the book paid for the honour, which, considering their reputation for thriftiness, must have made the decision a hard one for many a Kytherian.

The team, with the support of the Nicolaus Aroney Trust and other generous sponsors, has undertaken to transcribe the entire book for the website and to translate it into English for the non-greek-speaking diaspora community. We hope to also produce a printed version of the translation of Life in Australia sometime in 2005.
