In 1951, Yiannis and Maria Alfieris made their first trip back to Kythera after immigrating to the United States in 1906. This short film clip is from the original footage that they took on that trip. You will see the Alfieris family home in Potamos, Yiannis and Maria, Maria’s sister-in-law Yanoula Coulentianos Chlentzos ( in a yellow dress), and Maria’s neice Grigoria Katsoulis Chlentzos, holding a baby. Watch closely and you will see Yiayia Maria pulling the rope of the bell in the bell tower. The end of the clip is back on the mainland. Walking among the ruins with Maria Alfieris is Pitza Lykoyiannis, the sister of Maria’s son-in-law James Vrettos. See also: Kythera Connections Kythera 1951
